Sick Leave Laws Across the U.S.

Updated May 2019

Most workers require time off each year to care for their own and their family members’ health and medical needs. Currently, federal law does not mandate paid sick leave for private U.S. employees.

Until recently, most private employees had to rely on policies voluntarily implemented by their employers to receive paid sick leave. To fill this gap in coverage, a handful of states and localities have laws in place requiring certain employers to provide paid sick leave to their employees. To date, nine states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and more than 30 local jurisdictions have passed paid sick leave laws.
