Minimum Wage Rollback in St. Louis

August 17, 2017

On Aug. 28, 2017, a new Missouri law is set to go into effect, overriding St. Louis’s latest minimum wage increase and lowering the hourly rate from $10.00 to the state’s standard of $7.70. In 2015, St. Louis passed an ordinance that raised the minimum wage to $10.00 per hour in May 2017 and would have increased it again to $11.00 per hour in January 2018.

The Missouri General Assembly passed a law earlier this year, prohibiting local governments from setting a higher minimum wage than what the state requires. Therefore, employers doing business in St. Louis must roll hourly wages back to the state’s minimum wage. Missouri’s minimum wage rate is slightly higher than the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.
